This article aims to explore the crisis in literature education within the Brazilian school context by analyzing the historical and curricular reasons that have led to its gradual devaluation. Based on official documents, such as the Base Nacional Comum Curricular (BNCC) and the Lei de Diretrizes e Bases da Educação (LDB), this research critiques the marginalization of literature as a secondary component within the Portuguese Language discipline. It argues that this perspective diminishes its potential as a subject, limiting it to technical objectives and neglecting its artistic and reflective essence. The article proposes practical solutions to attempt to change this scenario, aiming to include the centrality of literature in the curriculum and to foster critical and sensitive readers attuned to contemporary issues embedded in their realities.
