This article aims to comprehend a historical perspective of Food and Nutrition Education (EAN) aligned with the Human Right to Adequate Food and the fight against hunger, within the context of public policies related to Food and Nutrition Security, specifically within the scope of the National School Feeding Program (PNAE). It presents a narrative review with a temporal nature, analyzing the origin and evolution of EAN from the early 20th century to the implications of the Covid-19 pandemic, structured into five phases for didactic purposes. Bibliographic research was conducted using databases such as Capes, Google Scholar, Scielo, and Scopus, as well as searches in the Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD). As a result, the transformation of EAN over time is highlighted, notably expressed as one of the priority axes of PNAE. Furthermore, based on this article, it is suggested to broaden the involvement of the school community in advocating for school meals as a right, particularly through contextualized and educational approaches. The research's contribution lies in social awareness of the role of critical education in promoting adequate and healthy nutrition in schools, as well as in elucidating phenomena, theories, and scientific knowledge in the historical construction of EAN in Brazil.
