This experience report describes the project "Exploring Brazilian Modernism through Photography", developed at the Polivalente Center for Fundamental Education with 8th grade students in the context of Art classes. The project proposed the use of photography as a multimodal learning tool about Brazilian Modern Art and the Elements of Visual Language. Students were challenged to capture images that represented the artistic movement of Brazilian Modernism, observing everyday scenes that best exemplified the characteristics of the movement.
The theoretical basis for the project's construction included the propositions of John Dewey (2010) on the use of artistic experiences in knowledge construction, the objectives proposed by the Common National Curriculum Base, BNCC, (2018) to stimulate students' creativity, the Fundamentals of Visual Language according to Dondis (2003), and the perspective of multiliteracies by Rojo (2003), which expands the concept of reading. In addition, normative documents from the Education Department of the Federal District were considered, which emphasize the importance of visual interpretation and the valorization of local culture.
