Pedagogical actions to incentive reading and the results of the portuguese SAEB (2005 to 2019): a study in public schools in the Federal District

Abstract

This research was developed as part of the professional master’s degree program in Education at the Faculty of Education, University of Brasília. The objective was to analyze the possible effects of actions related to reading on the SAEB results of the Portuguese Language in public schools of the early years of elementary education in the Administrative Region of Gama, Federal District (DF). The research used a qualitative method. Documentary analysis and semi-structured interviews were conducted with two principals and teachers from the 3rd and 4th grades of two selected schools with higher and lower Ideb scores. SAEB data made available by the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira were also analyzed. In addition, images of the libraries of the public schools in the early years were recorded. Subsequently, the description of the results of the interviews was used and content analysis techniques were employed, according to Bardin (2011). The results found indicated that effective pedagogical actions for reading contribute to the SAEB results. It can be concluded that the research made it possible to understand the factors that can have an impact on student performance in large-scale external evaluations.
